JetBlue Adds Flights at Spirit's Former Hub Airport

JetBlue Airways is increasing its flights at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. This comes just after Spirit Airlines stopped flying. JetBlue aims to become profitable again by using Spirit's former main airport.

Spirit Airlines recently closed down, making JetBlue the largest airline at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. This airport is located near Miami. JetBlue quickly announced over two dozen new flights from this location.

The airline is trying to improve its financial performance after several years of losses. JetBlue sees Spirit's former base as a key area for growth. It hopes to attract travelers who are now looking for new flight options.

JetBlue, once known for being innovative, has faced difficulties. The company has become smaller in recent years. It now handles less than 5 percent of domestic air travel, making it much smaller than major airlines like American, Delta, United, or Southwest.

This size makes it hard for JetBlue to compete directly with larger carriers. Its operating costs are also too high to offer the low fares that airlines like Spirit specialized in. This puts JetBlue in a tough spot, needing to grow but having few clear paths to do so.

According to John Grant, chief analyst at OAG, a company that tracks aviation data, this is a very difficult position. He stated, "You don’t know where you’re going and how you can compete."

From 2019 to 2025, JetBlue's costs increased by nearly 29 percent. This was due to pay raises for employees and higher airport fees. However, the airline's revenue only grew by 13 percent during the same period. JetBlue has lost money every year since 2019 and carries about $8.5 billion in debt.
