Barcelona is weighing up an approach for Piero Hincapie, Arsenal's Ecuador international defender, the Daily Mail reported. The Spanish champions recognize that completing any deal would be difficult, given Arsenal's position and Hincapie's current importance to the club.
Arsenal brought Hincapie to the club from Bayer Leverkusen on loan last summer. The deal included an option to buy him permanently for £45 million, plus a 10 percent sell-on clause. If that clause activates, a five-year contract with Hincapie has already been agreed in principle.
The 24-year-old has made 38 appearances for Arsenal this season as the club remains in contention for both the Premier League and Champions League titles. Manager Mikel Arteta has used him at centre-back and left-back, roles that have given the team defensive stability and tactical flexibility.
Arteta's comments suggest he views Hincapie as a key part of his plans. When asked about exercising the purchase option, the Arsenal manager said: "I would say so. Let's go through the season. We have already discussed the possible outcomes that we have after that period. But so far, we are very, very happy with him." Xabi Alonso, Hincapie's former coach now at Chelsea, described him as "a warrior who would run through walls for you."
Barcelona's sporting director Deco is searching for a left-sided centre-back who matches Hincapie's profile—young, physically strong, and experienced in major matches. However, Arsenal appears to hold the stronger position to secure his services, having already established the contractual framework and relationship.
The transfer situation reflects Arsenal's broader summer strategy. The club is seeking upgrades at full-back and in attack. Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez is also admired by Arsenal, Paris St Germain, and Barcelona. The Daily Mail reported that Arsenal may need to make "financial sacrifices" in other areas. Gabriel Jesus and Leandro Trossard have been mentioned as possible departures, though Jesus reportedly wants to see out his contract and interested clubs have been told bids above £18 million would be required.
Arsenal's decision on Hincapie will signal whether Arteta sees him as part of the club's next phase. Left-sided defenders with pace, aggression, and composure command high fees in the current market. Retaining Hincapie would preserve defensive depth while keeping a player who already understands the team's system.
