Barcelona have signed winger Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United. Sky Sports News understands the fee is £69.3m (€80m) inclusive of add-ons. Gordon signed a five-year contract and was introduced to journalists on Friday evening.
Gordon said his move to Barcelona was a childhood dream realised. "As soon as I knew Barca was a serious option, there was never any question," he told reporters. "I always wanted Barca. Barca is the biggest club on the planet. It's the stuff I dreamed of as a child. It really is a dream come true to be here."
The 25-year-old English winger acknowledged the weight of joining such a prestigious club. "I know it comes with a lot of responsibility, but I'm ready for this kind of challenge," Gordon said. "I know the players in the past who've worn the shirt... it holds a lot of weight, but I'm excited for the challenge."
Gordon expressed enthusiasm about playing alongside Barcelona's current squad. "To play with Lamine Yamal and the rest of the players is very exciting for me," he said. "I think the more players with quality around you, the better you are going to be. These players are at the very top level for a reason. They are the best players in the world."
Gordon demonstrated his commitment to Barcelona by learning Spanish before the move. He answered several questions in Spanish during his presentation. "I wanted to speak Spanish because, as a kid, I believed I would play for Barca, believe it or not," he explained. "I have a physio in Newcastle and we spoke every day and I told him that one day I would play for Barca, so I wanted to learn Spanish."
This season, Gordon was Newcastle's top goalscorer with 17 Premier League goals. In European competition, his performance was even more impressive. Only Kylian Mbappé and Harry Kane scored more Champions League goals than Gordon's 10 this season. Gordon signed a long-term contract extension at Newcastle in October 2024 with four years remaining, but the club left him on the bench in his final four games to protect him ahead of the expected move.
Barcelona faced competition from Bayern Munich to sign Gordon. Sky Sports News reported earlier this month that Bayern were interested in adding him to their attacking options alongside England captain Harry Kane, along with former Premier League players Michael Olise and Luis Diaz. Barcelona secured the transfer before the World Cup began.
Gordon's versatility played a key role in attracting Barcelona. He typically plays on the left wing in a 4-3-3 formation but has also been used effectively through the middle. His speed and goal-scoring ability impressed the Spanish club. With Robert Lewandowski departing Barcelona, space has opened up for Gordon to play centrally.
Barcelona's financial position has improved significantly, allowing them to pursue major signings. The club was unable to register new players until late last season but now has funds for three key positions: striker, winger and centre-back. LaLiga's spending rules work differently from England's system, based on revenue and squad-cost ratios set individually by the league for each club.
The key to Barcelona's spending power is a return to the 1:1 rule. Under this system, every Euro the club saves can be directly reinvested in transfer fees or wages. Previously, only a fraction of savings could be re-spent. Lewandowski's departure saves Barcelona around €40m annually in wages. Additionally, Barcelona is not covering Marcus Rashford's wages next season, though this situation could change.
Barcelona's revenue has also increased due to improvements at their stadium. The Spotify Camp Nou has been renovated and will soon reach a capacity of 80,000, with plans for the final capacity to exceed 100,000. This projected future revenue, combined with sponsorship from Spotify and success in winning LaLiga again, is factored into the club's spending budget set by the league.
