A stabbing at Winterthur station injured three people on Tuesday morning shortly after 8:30 a.m. The station serves the city of around 123,000 people near Zurich and is a major transport hub in north-eastern Switzerland. Emergency services quickly secured the area and took the three victims to hospital.
All three injured people are Swiss nationals aged 28, 43 and 52. One sustained serious injuries while the other two were reported to be in moderate condition. Zurich cantonal police confirmed that the suspect, also a Swiss national, was detained at the scene.
Witnesses told local media they saw a man running through the station around the time of the assault. Police declined to confirm details that spread on social media about what may have been said during the incident. Forensic teams cordoned off large sections of the station for most of the day while investigators gathered evidence.
Authorities have not yet established why the attack happened. Police have not said whether the suspect knew any of the victims or whether they are treating it as terrorism. The investigation remains ongoing.
The stabbing caused temporary disruption to rail services and station operations. Normal activity gradually resumed as the day progressed.
