Portugal's Ministry of Internal Administration stated that 48 officers from the Public Security Police (PSP) will be deployed to Lisbon airport from Friday onwards. The ministry also announced that 14 additional document control booths will be made available at arrivals, bringing the total to 34, with four more at departures for a total of 18. Electronic gates will increase to 31 at arrivals and 18 at departures, representing increases of 14 and four respectively.
Once expansion works are completed at Lisbon airport, the ministry plans to strengthen border control capacity at Porto and Faro airports during June and July by increasing booths and installing new electronic gates. From July, an additional 360 personnel will be assigned to the National Foreigners and Borders Unit (UNEF) across airports nationwide. The measures address recent long queues attributed to the new European Entry/Exit System (SES/EES), with waiting times reaching up to 3.5 hours at peak congestion across the continent, according to ACI Europe.
